Black and White Ruffed Lemur (Varecia variegata)

Don’t miss to say hi to our newly arrived Black-and-White Ruffed Lemurs. These primates arrived at their new home in early January 2014. After about three weeks of quarantine period, they finally cleared up to get into their own exhibits to meet Zoo Negara visitors.

A territorial animal, ruffed lemurs are nocturnal primates in which they are active at night. During the day, ruffed lemur sleeps by curling their body to a ball-like position. They “scent-mark” their territory by rubbing their body to branches in order to communicate with other lemurs. This largest lemur name is derived from Latin word for ghost as earliest people to discover lemurs thought it was a ghost in the night based on their bright, yellow eyes and loud calls.

The adorable ruffed lemur is located with their other primate neighbours (siamang, white handed gibbon and bonnet macaque) near the Children’s World. Check them out “lemuring” for the whole day!
