White-winged Wood Duck (Asarcornis scutulata)
Our Bird House received eight White-winged Wood ducks from Zoo Zlin in Czech Republic on 24th April 2015. This would be the start of a new chapter on conservation at the zoo.
This secretive species is known to only feed at night. During the day, it would nest in tree holes three to twelve meters above ground. The Bird House section makes sure the exhibit for these ducks is well suited for a conducive breeding environment.
These rare ducks were once found in Peninsular Malaysia but are now extinct! Being one of the largest species of ducks, they are endangered due to ongoing habitat loss, being hunted for eggs, pets and food.
Interesting right? Come over Zoo Negara today and visit these mysterious ducks at the Bird House!
