Leopard (Panthera pardus)
If big cats are your passion, do come to our must-visit Leopard exhibit. The newly designed open concept exhibit is located at the Mammal Kingdom.
The Leopard is known with various names, according to places of inhabitance. In our country, we are very fortunate to have leopards and panthers. Leopards have a brighter coat compared to panthers which are darker.
Leopards are listed under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). These highly endangered animals are hunted mainly for their skin.
Did you know that Panthers are found in densely forested areas where being darker is an advantage for them to remain unseen?
Puma (Puma concolor)
Also known as the Cougar or Mountain Lion, it is the largest cat in the genus felis, and is comparable in size as the leopard.
Pumas are found throughout a wide range of North Western of America. These Mountain lions are top predators in the ecosystems which they live. They help control the population of large ungulates.
Mountain lions have considerable trophy value and are hunted for sport. They are listed under Appendix I of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
Did you know that, in captivity, cougars have lived over 20 years, as compared to 8 - 10 in the wild? |
